Rob Walker: far from a ‘bland’ character
Dear Nigel,
What are your memories of Rob Walker? I grew up and still live in Indianapolis, and it was Walker, through Road & Track magazine, who fuelled my love of Grand Prix Racing way back in the late 1960s.

It’s been Formula 1 all the way for Nigel – he started covering the sport in 1971. In the mid-1970s he worked for Graham Hill’s Embassy F1 team, before joining Autosport for whom he has written over 400 Grand Prix reports. Nigel joined Motor Sport full-time on Januray 1 2008. As well as reporting on F1 for national newspapers, he has written 19 books on motor racing. His insightful writing and candid interviews with the great names in racing have made him one of the recognised authorities on F1.

Ah yes, Rob Walker stories are amongst my favorite. Like Mr. Wyant, I also was introduced to Rob Walker through Road & Track magazine at a very young age. I became a fan of Siffert through his writings, even though I never saw him race. Such was the ability of Mr. Walker to convey the story of a GP meeting at the time. I remmeber the articles being very long and thorough, covering practise sessions and everything else going on. There’s an excellent book, possibly now out of print, that recalls the life of Rob Walker from pre-war to the end. It’s a must-read.
