Is Bourdais as good as his Champ Car titles?

In recent weeks – and particularly, for very good reason, since the Italian Grand Prix – praise of Sebastian Vettel has been fulsome and widespread. No surprise there, for the youthful German has impressed at virtually every race, and as the competitiveness of Toro Rosso has improved (due in no…

  1. Nigel: I agree with you totally - Bourdais is truelly an incredible driver. I sincerley hope he is not overlooked - Do we have a French Schumacher - given the chance

  2. In motor sport talent can be enhanced (or masked) by the tools a driver is given. SeaBass has the talent, let us hope he is given the tools.

  3. Hello Nigel - I also agree totally. It would be ludicrous if Toro Rosso ( or should that be, their paymasters Red Bull? ) rejected such an obvious talent.
If they go ahead and sack Bourdais, the Red Bull teams should forfeit the right to be taken seriously as a competitive F1 outfit, and should be seen simply as mobile advertising hoardings.
Incidentally, why did Briatore fall out with Bourdais? What an opportunity he wasted, to acquire a potential F1 champion! Briatore surely damaged his reputation as a talent-spotter there.

  4. I agree with you completely Mr. Roebuck!

I also hope that Bourdais secures a seat for next year and his contract renewal, from outside of the team, seems like a straightforward choice. A guy like him will get good results.

Let’s hope he can put these dobuts to rest in a new street circuit!

  5. youre right, it may have taken a few races but hes a quick driver with a lot to offer a team like torro rosso. sato on the other hand is a quick driver….until he crashes

  6. I now live in St Petersburg Florida and I saw Bourdais drive a CART car in the “first” GP held here and I told anyone who would listen that here we had a young man with a future and I am happy that his numerous titles have confirmed my observation. I was looking forward to his baptism into F1 and I suppose a little disappointed that here we had the creme de creme of Ameriacn open wheel racing and his initial results were not too encouraging. However the Belgian GP was an eye opener and did in my opinion show his true talent and I feel that STR will be more than happy by the end of season 2009.

  7. I also agree that Bourdais is a talent that Toro Rosso would be very foolish to lose, especially if he were to be replaced by Buemi(as favoured by Dr Helmut Marko). A line up of Bourdais and Sato would be quite a formidable combination in my view.

  8. Bourdais is and will be a top driver.but he needs to get out of toro rosso. he needs a mc laren or ferrari.

  9. I guess the question you’d have to ask is why are Torro Rosso in F1 in the first place? If it’s purely as a feeder outfit for the Red Bull team by giving opportunities to rising stars (Ok, it worked with Vettell but Scott Speed anyone?) then maybe you could understand them ditching Bourdais for Buemi or whoever. But as winners in their own right and having beaten their so-called senior team to that accolade, the only reason I could see for replacing him would be if they either needed the money that another driver could bring(possible I guess) or if somebody like Alonso wanted to race for them. Since none of the 3 or 4 really top line drivers are clamouring for a Torro Rosso seat, then Bourdais is surely worth another season at least?

  10. Nigel, I aree with you completely. I have followed Bourdais during his Champcar career and admired him for being not only very quick but a real racer, not phased by going wheel to wheel with the likes of Paul Tracey. His talent took some time to surface in F1 but since Spa he has proved a class act. Sadly that may not be enough in todays paddock where commercial value sometimes holds sway over talent, but I hope he gets another chance. He may not turn out to be “the other Seb” after all.
